Launching Hazel Edwards' Authorpreneurship at Readings St Kilda

Launching Hazel Edwards' Authorpreneurship at Readings St Kilda

On a sunny Melbourne Sunday afternoon, Readings St Kilda hosted the much-anticipated launch of Hazel Edwards' latest book, Authorpreneurship.

Guests came far and wide. We had Hazelnuts, other publishers, writers and a number of Amba Press authors. Everyone enjoyed a delightful afternoon tea of book biscuits while Amba Press publisher, Alicia Cohen, engaged in a lively conversation with Hazel Edwards.

(The yummy and very popular book biscuits.)

With over 200 books to her name, Hazel Edwards is a celebrated figure in the literary world, and her reflections on her 50-year career drew a standing-room-only crowd, eager to hear her insights.

Hazel Edwards captivated the audience with her candid and heartfelt discussion about the nuances of writing, particularly for children. "Writing for children is the most satisfying and the most difficult writing", she shared, resonating deeply with the attendees. The afternoon was filled with Hazel's characteristic frankness, passion and humour. Her anecdotes about "mining my children's experiences and adventures" for her stories brought smiles and laughter, while her admiration for editors, "editors are my heroes," was met with enthusiastic nods from the crowd.

Listening to Hazel was a masterclass in the realities of a writing career. Her advice to "diversify and create a mixed portfolio of writing" highlighted the practical side of sustaining a long-term career in the arts. She spoke with humility about the emotional risks involved, noting, "Writing is a rich life, in terms of experiences... but not money! It's a risky business, emotionally. You need a good family emotional base."

The launch of Authorpreneurship was not just a celebration of a new book but also a tribute to Hazel Edwards' enduring legacy and the wisdom she generously shared with fellow writers and readers alike.

Hazel signed copies of all her books including There's a Hippopotamus on Our Roop Eating Cake for attendees.

A wonderful afternoon was had by all, and we were so grateful to our wonderful hosts Readings St Kilda.
